Smriti Irani's Decision To Set Up Eight New IITs

Students Question HRD Minister Over 8 New IITs

Union human resources development minister Smriti Irani's decision to set up eight new IITs has sparked an interesting debate. Students from the older IITs have begun an online petition seeking review of the move, and 6,000 signatures were gathered in less than a week. The petition, submitted to the minister online by IIT Kharagpur student Digvijay Patil, sought that the infrastructure of existing IITs — there are now 16 of them — be strengthened and upgraded first, before new institutes are started.

The petition received overwhelming support from the student community, and messages have been pouring in endlessly on social websites like Facebook and messaging network WhatsApp.IIT students are making all out efforts to project nationwide unanimity in this matter. Among the issues raised by the students are acute shortage of competent teaching staff, and inadequate facilities.

Available reports indicate that existing IITs in India have 6,591 sanctioned posts. Only 4,079 have been filled, a mere 62% of total requirement. Among these faculty positions are also teachers on visiting, adjunct and contractual arrangements. What is more, the eight IITs set up in 2009 have not yet shifted to permanent campuses.

Students fear that if eight new institutes are set up in such a situation, they will be no better than the eight struggling IITs set up in 2009. Such a state of affairs would result in the dilution of the IIT brand, said Manu Agarwal, a student of IT at the Banaras Hindu University-IIT. Agarwal pointed out that the average strength of any IIT is around 1,000 students, while the eight IITs set up in 2009 have confined the maximum number of students to 500.

What this means is that these eight IITs have been running at half capacity because of the lack of teachers and necessary infrastructure. In many IITs, students share rooms meant for single occupancy in the hostels, and three students are sometimes expected to live in rooms meant for only two. Laboratories and classrooms are inadequately furnished, Agarwal said. Given that the HRD minister has expressed willingness to scrap the controversial four-year undergraduate study programme in Delhi University, IIT students too hope their petition will be heard.

Sugary Drinks Damage Semen Quality in Men

Sugary Drinks Damage Semen Quality, Leads to Infertility in Men

Addiction to sugary drinks can leave a negative impact on the semen quality and reduce a man's chances of becoming a father, a new study says. In the study, regular consumption of sugary drinks lowered sperm motility in men. However, the association was found applicable to only healthy and lean men and not those who are obese or overweight, Livescience reported.

The study reported in the journal Human Reproduction included 189 men, aged between 18 and 22, hailing from Rochester in New York. As part of the study, the participants underwent physical examination and completed a health and diet questionnaire. Researchers interviewed the participants and noted down the frequency and number of sugar-sweetened drinks they consumed every day.

High consumption of sugar sweetened drinks, i.e. an average of 2.7 per day in healthy, thin men was associated with 6.3 percent lowered sperm motility (ability of sperm to move toward egg) compared to those who reported taking less than a drink daily. Researchers couldn't find such results in obese or overweight men. Additionally, men who reported drinking more sugary drink, both lean and obese men had reduced levels of a reproductive hormone follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH plays a major role in regulation of sperm production.

The growing number of infertile couple across the globe has invited wide attention lately. In 90 percent of the cases, low sperm count and poor sperm quality play major roles. Male fertility is decided by three factors- quantity (15 million sperm millilitre in a single semen ejaculation), quality (more number of sperms with oval heads and long tails) and finally movement of at least 40 percent of the sperm (ability of the sperm to swim through woman's cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes), according to the Mayo Clinic in US.

Blogger Sara Shantelle Throwing $40,000 Birthday Bash

You have to hand it to local lifestyle blogger Sara Shantelle Lim for being one smart cookie. She approached several businesses to sponsor her 27th birthday bash and promised to generate publicity in her blog for them in return. But her luxury lifestyle blog, which she started with her sister last January, has received a total of only 340,000 views to date. Popular local blogger Xiaxue claims to get 40,000 views daily.

And a check of Miss Lim's Instagram profile shows that she has only 610 followers. Most popular local bloggers have more than 20,000 followers on Instagram. Still, she did not let her relative obscurity stop her from generating a whopping $40,000 worth of sponsorship for her birthday party tonight. On Sunday, Miss Lim put out a press release about her "Candylicious Neon Birthday Bash 2014" on Sunday, naming her sponsors and listing the freebies she's getting.

She even explained how she managed to get so many sponsors - "mainly her close friends, who wants (sic) to throw Sara an amazing birthday party" while others believe that she can "help them to promote their brand well on her luxury blog" and "tap into her strong network of contacts". In the press release, she called sponsor Kim Lim, a "good friend". She went on to describe Miss Kim Lim as "the daughter of billionaire Peter Lim, who is known to have recently bought over Valencia Football Club".

* An easy thing to do is to eat a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger with a few drops of lemon juice with a pinch of salt just before a full meal. This simple tip will help start to activate your salivary glands which their by will produce the necessary enzymes. And all this will eventually help you so that the nutrients in the food are easily absorbed by your body.

Millionaire Beggar Leaves Her Fortune For The Needy

A blind female beggar who died here suddenly has left behind SR3 million in cash, jewelry, gold worth SR1 million and four buildings, with no heir to inherit the small fortune. Ahmad Saidi, an assistant to Ayesha, the dead beggar, said she had given him her will, which stipulates that all her money and property should be distributed among the needy. Saidi said he had informed the authorities, but there was no response. To keep his conscience clear, he took a box with the cash, gold and jewelry and emptied it out in the street in Al-Balad for the local residents to collect. “I am tired of this role,” he said. “I gave statements to the police and the court and received a promise that the authorities would do what was needed,” he said. Saidi said Ayesha had begged for 50 years. “I grew up with her in the same neighborhood since I was a young boy,” he said.
“The woman used to live with her mother and sister, both of whom were beggars.”

He said she received most of her money during holidays. Her wealth had increased after her mother and sister died, when she inherited their property. Saidi said that when he discovered she was a millionaire he advised her to give up begging, but she refused to do so. He said she wanted to make more money. At one stage, he helped her sell gold. “I used to sell each one for SR250 15 years ago, now such pounds cost around SR1,000 each,” he said. Saidi said that the families in Ayesha’s four buildings must leave, because the government should take control of the property and then issue a ruling.

“Ayesha gave me a will and I won’t give up until the authorities take over the homes,” he said.
In response, one resident said he would not leave because Ayesha had wanted him to stay there without paying any rent. Al-Balad Mayor Talaat Ghaith said the case, with all the documents, was now with the authorities. He denied that he had received money from Saidi. “The old lady hosted these families and it’s not my role or right to evict them,” Ghaith said. People in the neighborhood sympathize with the people living in the buildings because they are poor and often beg to make money.

Mandira Bedi Debuts Her Collection At LFW

Mandira Bedi made her Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 debut Thursday and showcased a sari collection titled "Real Women". She also surprised the audience when she presented her mother Geeta Bedi as her showstopper. Dressed in a blue sari with golden border, Geeta looked elegant when she hit the ramp.
When asked to say a few words, Mandira's mother said: "I am not much of a speaker, all I want to say is that I am proud to be her showstopper."

The runway was flush with Mandira's summer saris in shades like blue, pink and green among others with golden border. There were a few printed saris too. As she had said earlier, her collection was high on effects and low on embellishments. "I am feeling extremely emotional. The concept of my show is real women. This is my first show, my mother is my showstopper and it's a very emotional moment for me," Mandira, last seen in hit TV show "24", told reporters post the show.

"Not just my mother, even the other ladies, who walked for me, I am grateful to them because they came here just for me," added the actress who invited successful women from various walks of life to walk the ramp, including a lawyer, nutritionist and fitness trainer among others.

Mandira ventured into fashion designing last year and even opened a signature store here.Talking about her collection, she said: "I have used all summer colours for my saris and as far as the fabric is concerned it includes silk, satin and georgette." The on going fashion event, which started Wednesday, will continue till Sunday.
