Belief in God may boost depression treatment |
The power of prayer! Belief in God may improve treatment for those suffering with depression, a new study claimed. Patients who believe in God may significantly improve the outcome of receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness, according to researchers.
In the study, David H Rosmarin, McLean Hospital clinician and instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, examined individuals in an effort to investigate the relationship between patients' level of belief in God expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.
"Our work suggests that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without, regardless of their religious affiliation. "Belief was associated with not only improved psychological wellbeing, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm," said Rosmarin.
The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale.
Of the patients sampled, more than 30 per cent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high.
Patients with "no" or only "slight" belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment than patients with higher levels of belief. "Belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care. More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes," researchers concluded.
"Given the prevalence of religious belief in the United States - over 90 per cent of the population - these findings are important in that they highlight the clinical implications of spiritual life. I hope that this work will lead to larger studies and increased funding in order to help as many people mas possible," Rosmarin said.

Deepika Padukone Beauty Tips |
Want to glow like Deepika Padukone? Follow her beauty regime
Deepika applies sun screen moisturiser daily. Do you wish for a glowing skin, soft shiny hair and a fit body? Take a peek into the beauty regimes of Bollywood divas like Deepika Padukone and Nargis Fakhri. They're not skin deep but keep them healthy and beautiful.
Each one of them follows a different regimen, but one thing is common in their must do list - water intake and use of moisturiser.
Here are the health and beauty programmes that Deepika Padukone, Nargis Fakhri, Isha Koppikkar and Evelyn Sharma follow religiously:
Deepika Padukone: My daily skincare regime includes moisturiser with SPF (sun protection factor) during the day. At night, I remove whatever little makeup I wear and then apply hydrating cream.
Also, plenty of water, balanced meals, regular workouts and adequate sleep figure on my must have list.
Since my work involves a lot of travelling and exposure to extreme climatic conditions, it ends up taking a toll on my hair. I get tender coconut hair oil massages at least once a week. It helps me protect my hair from any form of damage.
Nargis Fakhri: I need a beauty regime that guarantees results. A 20-minute deep conditioning treatment with hot coconut-based hair oil for my hair really works for me as it locks in the moisture and keeps my hair soft and smooth.
I make sure that I drink two litres of water a day to flush out toxins. I also have coconut water daily and make sure I eat something every two hours. My snacking is limited to health foods like walnuts, almonds and dryfruits. At night, I try to eat a light meal, but sometimes I don't succeed. I absolutely love desserts and, yes, I cheat very often. I think the key is not to be hard on yourself, but use moderation. One should eat everything in required quantity. You must know what suits your body the best.
Isha Koppikar: I am very particular about cleansing, toning and moisturising my skin. I am very particular about moisturising my body with products containing natural ingredients. I also love products with mint as they are so cooling and refreshing.
When your hair is exposed to summer heat, it is imperative to keep your hair free from dirt and stickiness.
My diet includes more liquids, especially in summer. A lot of fruits and vegetables are an integral part of my diet. I cut down on non-vegetarian food in summer. Lemon and mint juice refreshes and helps me beat the summer heat. Curd and buttermilk are my favourite, especially during summer. For breakfast, egg whites and multigrain toast is the best. For lunch, jawar ki roti and sabzi and for dinner, fish and salad are my safest bet. In between meals, if hungry, I have fruits or curd or buttermilk.
Evelyn Sharma: Moisturising should be a basic bodycare regime to replenish moisture loss due to harsh weather conditions. Coconut-based moisturisers work wonders for the skin as they lock in moisture from escaping the skin's surface. The result is naturally soft skin throughout the day.
Make sure that your diet includes fibre as it has necessary vitamins and minerals. Balance your diet with rich portions of fruits, vegetables, nuts and liquids. It is important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water. I have coconut water through the day and it is a vital aspect of my diet.

Wheatgrass Juice for Your Health |
By taking wheatgrass juice shots or adding the intensely flavored juice to their smoothies, wheatgrass juice fans aim to boost their immunity, detox their systems, and increase their energy. Some proponents claim that chlorophyll can raise the body's oxygen levels and stave off or treat conditions like gout, rheumatic pain, and even cancer.
Wheatgrass nutrients
On a macronutrient and micronutrient level (fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals), wheatgrass doesn’t seem like a health food to get excited about. A typical one-ounce serving contains only seven calories, no fat and virtually no carbohydrates and protein. Wheatgrass contains no essential omega-3 fatty acids nor does it have much vitamin content with the exception of 7 percent of the daily value (DV) of vitamin C. A one-ounce shot also contains 10 percent DV of iron, but only a trace amount of any other well-known vitamins and minerals.
Wheatgrass Juicing
Although it may not wipe out your health woes, using wheatgrass juice can add a considerable nutrient boost (much like other, more affordable antioxidant-rich foods, such as blueberries and strawberries). Since introducing large amounts of wheatgrass juice into your system too quickly can cause nausea and diarrhea, it's important to start with no more than two to three tablespoons daily.

But, there’s an easy solution — stick-on bras that can act as one-stop solution to all these problems. Also known as adhesive bras, they eliminate the need for straps, absolve any visible seams and add shape and volume. While these bras are mostly advisable for small to medium cup sizes,Bringing sexy back is just a matter of confidence. But, we often see our courage waning and we end up skipping that gorgeous dress with a plunging back or the lust-worthy sheer-back tunic. The common reason? Chocolates can help keep you slim |
Chocolate lovers no longer have to fear the flab as eating more can help you keep slim, new research claims.
A study has found that despite boosting calorie intake, regular chocolate consumption is related to lower body mass index (BMI).
The effect is modest but greater than can be explained by chance, say the US researchers who took account of influencing factors such as overall fat consumption and exercise.
BMI relates height and weight and is the standard measurement used to assess levels of obesity.
The good news about chocolate emerged after scientists screened a group of 972 men and women with an average age of 57 for a study of statins - cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Among other diet and lifestyle questions, participants were asked: "How many times a week do you consume chocolate?"
Chocolate is known to contain plant chemicals called polyphenols that combat heart disease and may influence metabolism.
The researchers suspected they might, to some extent at least, off-set the unwelcome effects of high saturated fat levels in chocolate bars and sweets.
No account was taken of different types of chocolate, some of which contain more healthy elements than others.
The results showed that chocolate was not only "calorie neutral" but actually appeared to make people slimmer.
Participants who ate chocolate on more days of the week than average were statistically likely to have a lower BMI than those who did not.
This was despite the fact that people who ate more chocolate did not consume fewer calories overall, or take more exercise.
Study leader Dr Beatrice Golomb, from the University of California at San Diego, said: "Our findings appear to add to a body of information suggesting that the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining their ultimate impact on weight.
"In the case of chocolate, this is good news - both for those who have a regular chocolate habit, and those who may wish to start one."

Brush your teeth twice to avoid heart disease |
As recommended by dentists, brushing your teeth twice a day can also reduce your risk of heart disease.
Over the last 20 years, there has been increased interest in links between heart problems and gum disease and it has been established that inflammation in the body, including mouth and gums, plays an important role in the build up of clogged arteries.
To investigate whether the number of times individuals brush their teeth has any bearing on the risk of developing heart disease, researchers analysed data from over 11,869 adults who took part in the Scottish Health Survey. The researchers analysed data about lifestyle behaviour such as smoking, physical activity and oral health routines. Individuals were asked how often they visited the dentist (at least once every six months, every one to two years, or rarely/never) and how often they brushed their teeth. On a separate visit, nurses collected information on medical history and family history of heart disease, blood pressure and blood samples from consenting adults. The samples enabled the researchers to determine levels of inflammation that were present in the body. The data gathered from the interviews were linked to hospital admissions and deaths in Scotland until December 2007.
It was found that oral hygiene was generally good with 62 percent of participants saying they visited the dentist every six months and 71 percent reporting that they brushed their teeth twice a day. During the eight years of follow-up, 555 participants developed heart disease, which was fatal in 170 cases. In 74% (411 cases) of heart disease events, the principal diagnosis was coronary heart disease. Participants who reported poor oral hygiene (never/rarely brushed their teeth) were twice more likely to suffer a heart related event than others.
These findings show that poor oral hygiene is associated with higher risk of heart disease and low grade inflammation.
