Sex Traffickers 'using Facebook' |
Sex traffickers 'using Facebook' to lure victims
Gangs are using social media sites such as Facebook to lure young women into crime and prostitution, the head of European policing agency Europol said on Wednesday. Rob Wainwright said traffickers were drawing victims in by posting advertisements for childcare or cleaning vacancies and once ensnared, controlling their movements with webchats and webcams. "They are using modern technological tools to more efficiently monitor an increasing number of victims," Wainwright told the Centre for Social Justice think-tank in London.
"So instead of paying them a visit every day they can use webchat services and also webcams to confirm that they are where they should be, in that brothel waiting for the next customer.
"In the past pimps and traffickers had to do that by physically visiting them. Now they can just do it at the click of a button and therefore control 50 victims much more easily and readily in virtual form," he said. The police chief said criminal gangs regarded trafficking as a "low-risk, high profit" venture, which generates around $150 billion a year for criminal gangs.
Most of Europe's estimated 500,000 victims are from Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary with Britain, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands the most likely destinations. Wainwright called for an international effort to tackle the problem. "As things currently stand, organised crime groups are going about the business of modern slavery with little fear of being caught and pursued. We urgently need to do much better," he said. "There is no point in sitting on a vital piece of information in one country if it can break a syndicate spread across five or more others. The culture of policing must change," he added.

Hrithik Roshan And Sussanne Khan Granted Divorce by Family court |
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan and estranged wife Sussanne formally ended their marriage on Saturday. A family court in Mumbai granted them divorce by mutual consent. Both had come in separate vehicles and left before 11 am. There were no signs of acrimony or bitterness.
Hrithik, revelling in the recent success of his film Bang Bang, and Sussanne had decided to end the marriage of 13 years on an amicable note and had filed for a mutual consent divorce six months ago in the court complex located in Bandra, close to their suburban home.
Hrithik, son of actor-director Rakesh Roshan, donned a hat and wore black, while Sussane wore a white collared t-shirt. Both had released public statements last December that they were headed for a split.
The mutual consent plea essentially stated that the couple could no longer reside together as husband and wife as irretrievable differences have cropped up and efforts to resolve it have had no effect. The marriage had broken down beyond repair and hence they were filing the plea.
In a mutual consent plea, there is a six month cooling off period at the end of which if neither side withdraws their consent, the court on finding that there was no coercion or collusion and existence of a genuine marital breakdown then grants a divorce.

Father Murders Tenant For Sexually Assaulting A Minor Daughter |
A 52-year-old man allegedly murdered his tenant who he claimed had sexually assaulted his minor daughter around a month ago. The incident took place in Khajuri Khas area of North East Delhi last night. It was reported to the local police around 4 AM when the man walked in to the police station and told them that he has murdered his tenant and escorted a police team to the house where Omkar (45) was found dead.
"The man told us that Omkar had sexually assaulted his daughter around a month ago and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the matter to anyone. The family however came to know about the incident recently," said a police official.
Instead of reporting the matter to police, the girl's father decided to take revenge himself. Omkar who hailed from Madhya Pradesh had gone to his hometown to celebrate Diwali.
"On his return to Delhi, the 52-year-old man confronted him last night and in a fit of rage, strangled him to death. It seems that he was killed with a rope or something but the exact cause of death will be revealed following a postmortem," the officials said.
Omkar's family has been informed. He is survived by his wife and children at his native village in Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, the 14-year-old girl was given counselling by an NGO in the presence of her mother.

In A Single Gene, A Path To Fight Heart Attacks |
Two major studies by leading research groups published on Wednesday independently identified mutations in a single gene that protect against heart attacks by keeping levels of triglycerides — a kind of fat in the blood — very low for a lifetime. These findings are expected to lead to a push to develop drugs that mimic the effect of the mutations, potentially offering the first new class of drugs to combat heart disease in decades, experts say. Statins, which reduce LDL cholesterol, another cause of heart disease, became blockbusters in the late 1980s. Since then there have been no major new drugs approved for lowering heart disease risk. But experts caution that drug development takes years and that there are no guarantees that new treatments will work as hoped.
Heart attacks are the leading killer in the United States, and about 720,000 Americans a year have them.
Although statins are effective in reducing heart attack risk, many users still often have high levels of triglycerides and go on to have heart attacks. So the results of the new studies are good news, said Dr Daniel J Rader, the director of the Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine and Lipid Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania, who was not involved in the research. "We've been looking for something beyond statins," Rader said. "After we have put people on high-dose statins, what else can we do? Essentially nothing."
Experts differ in their estimates of how many Americans might be candidates for a triglyceride-lowering drug. If the eligible group included all adults with triglyceride levels of 200 or more — the normal level is 150 or less — that would mean about 20 percent of adult Americans. If it was just those with the highest levels, above 500, then 2 percent to 3 percent of adults would qualify. The discovery announced on Wednesday was hinted at in 2008 in a much smaller study in the Amish conducted by researchers from the University of Maryland's medical school. One in 20 Amish people has a mutation that destroys a gene, APOC3, involved in triglyceride metabolism, as compared with one in 150 Americans generally. The scientists were intrigued but did not have enough data to nail down the gene's role in heart attacks.
Sam, a 55-year-old Amish farmer who declined to have his last name published, saying he was uncomfortable about being conspicuous, has such a beneficial mutation. He recalls little heart disease in his family. On a cold day last fall, as an icy rain fell outside, he sat at a small wooden table in his daughter's house and laid out a sheet of paper that showed he had a triglyceride level of 45. The average in the United States is 147. "It's nice that something came out that is positive," he said. Triglycerides have long puzzled researchers, although they are routinely measured along with cholesterol in blood tests and are often high in people with heart disease. Many experts were unconvinced they actually caused heart attacks. Clinical trials of drugs that lowered triglycerides by a small amount added to doubts about their role in heart attacks. The drugs had no effect on heart attack rates.
As for triglycerides themselves, "do they just keep bad company or are they independently doing something to risk?" asked Dr Robert Hegele, a heart disease expert at Western University in London, Ontario, who was not involved with the new studies. Those studies, published in The New England Journal of Medicine and funded by the National Institutes of Health and the European Union, provide "a very, very strong type of evidence," Hegele said, that triglycerides are in fact a cause of heart attacks.
The work began several years ago when researchers at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT starting searching through an enormous data set drawn from 70 studies involving 200,000 people to see if there were tiny genetic changes near or in genes that seemed to lead to very high or very low amounts of triglycerides in the blood. They also asked whether people who happened to have a higher or lower triglyceride level also had a higher or lower incidence of heart attacks. The researchers discovered that people with a genetic predisposition to higher triglyceride levels had more heart attacks and those with genetically lower triglyceride levels had fewer. Their study, published last year in Nature Genetics, did not isolate individual genes, though. It just pointed to signposts on the long stretch of 30 million DNA letters that were near the genes. So the investigators began a hunt for the genes themselves.
To that end, they mapped the genes of 3,734 Americans, about 2,500 of whom were white and the balance African-American. The researchers reported the results of that effort on Wednesday. One gene, APOC3, stood out. The scientists found four mutations that destroyed the function of this gene. The Amish study had discovered that people with such a mutation could drink a big rich milkshake, loaded with fat, and their triglyceride levels did not budge. For everyone else, they spiked. The new studies show what that means to people's health. "Those who carry the gene mutations have a 40 per cent reduction in triglyceride levels and a 40 per cent lower risk of heart disease," said Dr Sekar Kathiresan of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute. He is the lead researcher on the gene project.
Now, he added, "there is a route to heart attacks that is independent of LDL," referring to the form of cholesterol associated with heart disease. The other study, led by Dr Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen of Copenhagen University Hospital, used data from 75,725 subjects to learn whether low triglyceride levels were linked to a reduced heart attack risk. They were. The researchers also asked whether people who had mutations destroying the APOC3 gene had fewer heart attacks. They did. Those with such mutations had a 44 percent reduction in triglycerides and a 36 per cent lower heart attack risk. The Danish data, Kathiresan said, "are eerily consistent with our data."
"It is incredible how reproducible the finding is," he added. Yet the two groups worked independently, with The New England Journal of Medicine coordinating publication of their studies. For the University of Maryland scientists who conducted the 2008 Amish study, the new finding shows that their hypothesis about the gene was correct. Those with the mutation had less calcification of their arteries, an indication that they had less heart disease. But the Maryland group was not able to say if those people also had fewer deaths from heart disease. Toni Pollin, lead researcher for the study, explained: "To really find out if it is related to heart disease we'd need to follow people over time. And the Amish use hospitals a lot less than other people, so it is hard to document the cause of death." Meanwhile, a small California company, Isis, also hit upon the gene when it was looking for ways to make triglyceride levels plunge in the small group of people with disorders leading to triglyceride levels so high they can be fatal. They made a drug that counteracts the gene and began testing it. It slashed triglyceride levels by 71 per cent.
"It is the most important drug in our pipeline," said Dr Stanley Crooke, the chief executive of Isis. "Trust me, these data are really exciting." The company has no plans to test whether its drug prevents heart attacks in the general population. That sort of huge study, lasting years, would require the resources of a much larger company. But heart researchers see the Isis drug as, at least, proof that it is possible to come up with drugs in what could be a new class of pharmaceuticals to protect against heart disease.

Microwave Using Precautions |
13 Things You Should Never Put In The Microwave
If you’ve ever started a fire in the microwave before, just know: The microwave, though it’s been around for quite some time now, is still a mystery to many of us. It heats things in a fraction of the time, but sometimes it also makes things explode.
There are so many great things the microwave can do. It bakes a potato in minutes. It makes single serving cakes in coffee mugs for when you can’t wait to make a real deal cake. It almost seems like it can do ANYTHING. But, the microwave just can’t handle everything. There are some things you put in the microwave oven that make it go completely berserk. We’ve listed them for you below so you can start using your microwave with more confidence — and fewer explosions.
1. Chinese Take-Out Containers
DON’T START A FIRE IN YOUR KITCHEN! Many people have made this mistake, and they’ve had to deal with the spark (or flame) that happens when you nuke this container. Metal is one of those items that you want to keep far away from the microwave — it’s a fire starter. Remember: no metal utensils, cookware, or containers in the microwave. Ever.
2. Lunch Bags
Lunch bags aren’t as innocent as they seem. Keep paper bags, plastic bags or newspapers out of the microwave. The USDA says that, “They are not sanitary, may cause a fire, and may emit toxic fumes. Intense heat may cause a bag to ignite, causing a fire in the oven…” Yikes!
3. Yogurt Containers
One-time use plastic containers — such as yogurt, margarine or sour cream — shouldn’t be used in the microwave. They’re intended just for one time use and aren’t equipped to withstand high heat. The containers could warp or melt in the microwave, which can release chemicals into your food.
4. Eggs
Making hard boiled eggs in the microwave oven is trouble. If you try to hard boil eggs in your microwave you’re likely to end up with a big mess to clean up. The rapid heat from the microwaves creates a lot of steam in the egg. The steam has no where to go except to explode out so that’s exactly what it does.
5. Styrofoam Containers
Most of us have heard this before, but just in case a few of you are still reheating your take out in these containers, keep this in mind: styrofoam is a type of plastic. And plastic doesn’t play nice in the microwave — unless otherwise marked on the container.
6. Fruit
Some fruit might be able to withstand the heat, but not all. Grapes will explode. And raisins will smoke. Careful guys.
7. Plates With Metallic Trim
Think about it. IT’S METAL. The metal can react to the heat and damage your microwave (and china).
8. Red Sauce, Without A Lid
It’s just going to make a mess.
9. Plastic Storage Containers
Most Tupperware-type containers are made of plastic, guys, and we’ve already gone over what happens to plastic in the microwave. But, there are specifically labeled plastic storage containers that are microwave safe. Just be sure to double check.
10. Hot Peppers
Nothing bad will happen to the peppers — except that they’ll maybe catch on fire — but when you open the microwave door after nuking hot peppers the chemical released from them will sting your eyes and burn your throat. No fun.
11. Travel Mugs
Many travel mugs are not safe to put in the microwave. If it’s made from stainless steel, don’t nuke it. The stainless steel will block the heat from warming your coffee or tea and can damage your microwave. If it’s plastic, check the bottom of the mug to see if it’s marked as microwave safe.
12. Aluminum Foil
We just want to be sure you fully understood that putting any metal, even the foil that’s covering your leftovers, should not go in the microwave. It could start a fire in there.
13. Nothing
If you turn the microwave on with nothing in it you’ll probably blow the whole thing. Since there is nothing to absorb the microwaves, like food, the magnetron — the thing that makes the microwave function — ends up absorbing the microwaves and essentially self destructs.
